I feel some ISP provided modems and routers are outdated and slow as well. Plus, the yearly rental fee are enough to buy a better modem and router.

I agree there seem to be a lot of cheaply made modem and routers which break often, or become outdated in a few months.
Maybe building a router and modem with a Linux computer, and network pci cards, pci wifi cards, and other parts would be more reliable than buying a router from a computer store.

I wouldn't mind building my own router, seems like they could use some sort of cooling in them which they all lack.

I think the router maker may not add a cooling fan because they dont want the router to last very long.
