I feel sites can use a plug-in or add-on, mod to hide content.

They can hide or block content, but sometimes if you cut the loading time of the site short, you can stop the blocks from loading.

I think it maybe more difficult to block embedded content like a video or a picture file as well.

Sadly you can't get around it if its a video or pic, their embedding is done in a different way and impossible to get around.
