I want to wait till my device is 4 years old, so in another 2 years I can see myself buying a new one.

I think if there is a gaming smartphone with built-in controller and has a lot of fun shooter and RPG games, I may buy a new smartphone sooner.

I don't need a gaming phone, that's what my Switch is for. Plus the tiny screen is no good for game controls.

There are gaming controller cases which add controls to some phones, like the Razer phone and also can protect the phone from some drops.

There are some gaming phones with a larger screen than the Gameboy and 3DS. If you use a controller case on a phone, it can be enjoyable to use a phone for gaming.

Still not interested, I tried using my phone once for gaming but it got too hot to make it worthwhile, it would just risk the longevity of my device.

I agree that smartphones are getting too hot when gaming. I think the longevity of the battery may be worse from charging it a lot as well after gaming.
