Differences between php 5 vs php 4?

I been installing some modules on my websites. I notice one module that recommend me to switch to php 5 instead of 4.

Are there any noticeable difference in php 5 compared to php 4.

I know almost nothing about php. I just know it is a web scripting language, and varies sites like phpBB, Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress uses it.
