Always a risk indeed, even with the best setup, why you need a good backup and AV/anti-malware to protect yourself.

A good firewall may also prevent some viruses which can find and hack your computer which is connected to the internet, and exploit a weakness in your operating system

Firewall will keep out the basic stuff, but more expert stuff will stride right past it.

I heard using a program in a virtual machine can protect your program and files from viruses unless the virus infects your virtual machine files.

A VM or isolated PC is the best way though you got to be careful of stuff that happens to your browser as well.

I feel users also have to be careful with running programs like instant messengers, e-mail clients, and online games since they may have web browsers built-in and online features like file sharing which can cause a PC to get infected.
