I'll only upgrade to another OS if I buy another PC, I'm not going to go through the trouble of an upgrade process.

Upgrading some Linux based Operating Systems like Ubuntu, and Linux Mint is pretty easy and free since you just need to agree to upgrade Linux from the Linux Update program to the latest version. Google Android which is based on Linux is also the same if your phone or tablet maker let you upgrade the OS by sending you a notification to download and install the upgrade for free, and you agree, Google Android will automatically download the update, and install it like updating apps.

I think for Apple Mac OS X is similar, but you just need to pay $20+ online in its App store for the upgrade, and Apple upgrades your Mac by downloading the installer, and upgrading OS X after the download is done.

Windows is slightly harder to upgrade, and more expensive since a upgrade disc cost $199 for the retail box upgrade, but it is not too hard if you have the install disc, and run it from within Windows, but you may get errors if a computer parts or software is incompatible.

which is why for windows I feel it's just best to wait till you buy a new PC to get a OS upgrade.

Indeed, the cost of buying Windows 8 Upgrade seperately is very expensive if you don't buy it with a PC or Laptop.

There is a USB version of Windows 8 where you can run it from a faster USB 3.0 32GB or larger Flash drive, so you don't need to install Windows 8, and just use a USB flash drive to start Windows.

seems to me that can cause some lag when running certain programs.

Using a USB drive may lag when running big programs when using it with a USB 2.0 Flash drive, and USB 2.0 port on older PCs, but if a new computer has USB 3.0, and Windows to Go is use on a faster USB 3.0 Flash drive like Patriot Supersonic Rage XT 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive with a Read speed Up to 180MB/s and Write speed Up to 50MB/s , it is faster than most mechanical hard drives, and some older SSD drive, but slower than a modern SSD.

With Windows 8, you can use a USB Flash drive to add more virtual RAM to your computer with Readyboost, so the same USB Flash Drive which Windows is installed on can also be used for Readyboost to speed up your computer, so it may be faster if you use a faster USB 3.0 flash drive.

USB 3.1 is coming out soon with a top speed of 10 Gb per second, so the speed for internal vs external drives may not exist as long as you buy a faster USB flash drive.
