I think it is important to backup your data, so you can at least use another computer to open a file stored on a USB flash drive, and other storage drive while a PC is updating.

Hrmmm, I can't think of anyone who keeps a clone of a PC just to use if the first one goes down.

I think schools and workplaces sometimes keep a clone of their PC's hard drive to save time when removing a virus takes too long to remove.
But, not many people make clones of their PC because it takes a long time.

clone and back ups of data is good and keeping a ready to use pc is a good idea if you need to get backup and running in a instant.

I think some people keep backups of their Virtual Machine's virtual drives, so they can use it on another computer very quickly as long as the computer has the virtual machine software installed on their PC's storage drive.
I think keeping clones of a drive help save time on installing software, and hardware driver software which can take a long time to find on websites.

Usually VMs are easy to back up with with shadow copy feature or basic window back up.

I think manually backing up virtual machine virtual drive files are not very hard if you know where you saved the file.
