I think most Access Databases are not optimizes, so they may contain multiple copies of the same data in a database, and the database is used for storing physical files rather than linking to files on a server which is faster.

Access Databases can be pretty hard to optimize where large access databases runs at a decent speed on a lowend computer, or server.

I just know when you really get into low end pcs running stuff like access is hard on it. I know our schools had i3s and they often struggled or crashed.

Auto-filesave in MS Office sometimes make Windows crash when the file is very big.

That's possible, school's don't get pcs that can multitask very well, specially when all their OS runs off a campus wide sever setup.
