would need to hunt a parts/junk shop daily or weekly to get everything a person needs. I wouldn't mind doing it.

I feel using some electronic parts like tablet/smartphone circuitboards and USB chargers may work at making a homebuilt monitor. It maybe difficult to figure out how to connect HDMI video input and what cable to use to connect a LCD display panel to more basic circuitboards taken from tablets, toys, and MP3 players with video playback.

A 3D printer and other tools is useful for making parts like the monitor case, buttons, and monitor stands which is hard to buy new.

Could be rather costly to get a 3D printer, might be cheaper to hunt for parts

That is true. A good 3D printer will cost a lot of money. I feel searching for parts could be cheapest, or you maybe able to find parts for free from electronics recycling places where people bring their old electronics to be recycled or donated to someone who wants it.

There was good places like Radio Shack, but most of them have gone out of business.

I feel websites like eBay, Amazon Marketplace, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc made most electronics and computer parts stores go out of buisness because they cant compete with the lower prices from people who sometimes sell parts for $1 to $5. Dollar stores selling electronic accessories like usb and video cables, batteries, lightbulbs, and wires may of also took away a lot of buisness from Radioshack and electronics parts stores.

ebay isn't a bad place, assuming the seller knows what they are selling.
