I remember reading a tech blog posts that CPU thermal paste is attracting ants which like to eat the paste.

I read that plus heat of components as well, kind of crazy bugs would go after it.

It is concerning that thermal paste makers don't test out their thermal paste more to see if it attract bugs.

Most likely found some cheap material they wanted to use. Companies do anything to cheapen parts.

I think there may also be some factories who are less careful in hiring workers who may steal the good thermal paste to sell , and replace the stolen thermal paste with poorer quality thermal paste which attracts insects.

Very possible and then resell it to make extra cash since most people look for deals on that.
