I think the Adobe Flash animation, software and game making software cost a lot of money like other Adobe software like Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
Java can be a free flash alternatives to making animations, and games like Minecraft and Runescape.

Java can be a good free alt, but you need to be able to wrap your head around its concept.

I think a lot of people may rather spend money on paid animation and game making sofrware than learn Java which can take a long time to learn.
There seem to be more Adobe Flash games than Java games on websites. I think you need to buy the flash game and animation software from Adobe to make flash games. But, most people have Adobe flash installed in their web browser when Facebook flash games were more popular, and YouTube needed Adobe flash player to play video before HTML5 was used.

I agree on it taking awhile, a 10 week class was not enough to cover java.

I feel, for very smart people with a lot of time, it may take a year or longer to learn enough about Java to start making 3D games.

I could use a year to learn it, that's for sure as it gets pretty complex pretty quickly.
