I agree people who don't play games, do media editing, code, or other computer resources intensive stuff can stick with XP for a few more years since it is reasonably fast, and simple to use. But, I think people will go to 7 if XP becomes insecure due to people hacking it easily.

Perhaps, but still if you limit the applications you use to those that follow a Secure development life cycle ie. have been coded from the ground up to be as secure as possible. then you can minimise the risks,
Though i've seen quite a few version of windows xp that are damned near awesome and slightly more secure than your typical version,
Also coding is a perfect use for Windows XP coding does not take up much resources and generally XP can handle 3gb ram 768mb graphics which should be enough for gaming/media editing.

I think people who want to play DirectX 10 games will go with Windows 7 since Win. Vista was a flop. But, I got a feeling many people will either dual boot 7, and XP or keep a XP machine since getting used to a new OS can be frustrating.
Plus, early adopters usually get more bugs then late adopters since the OS should be faster and have fewer bugs after 2 to 3 Service packs.
Plus, the price of the OS at "some" stores might come down after the hype is over like how Win XP Pro is on sale a lot at local comp. stores here.
