Building your own motherboard is possible, but very few people build them since it would take a long time to gather all the parts, and manually wire and connect everything. Plus, most people don't have the machines and skills to make their own computer chips.

You also may need to use some parts like computer chips which only work for certain operating systems which has the software drivers to run them, so the chips would be locked to a certain OS if they don't work on other operating systems like Linux, and Mac because the parts makers don't make them work for Linux, and Mac operating systems as well.

The way things started out though, nobody knew about PCs, now most people know a lot about PCs and what to get and it won't be long till people are building them from scratch.

I think many people will still mostly buy PCs since it is not really a huge hassle or expense to buy a new PC, and learn how to use Windows 8, Mac, and Linux, and to replace a few software which are not compatible with 8, and Mac.

If they switch to Linux, they will be saving more money since Linux is free, and almost all software for Linux is free as well. Plus, they can buy a cheaper PC to run Linux since Linux runs well on cheaper PCs unlike Windows which work very slowly or not at all on cheaper PCs.

There are cheaper PCs which cost $299.99. Cheaper PC are not super fast, but they work great for typing up homework, using web browsers, basic video and image editing, casual gaming on Flash games sites, and playing games like Minecraft, Runescape, and Neopets. There are people who buy a $299 PC to save time by not finding time to build a PC, the $299 PC works for their needs, and they checked that most of their software like Firefox, OpenOffice, Gimp, etc work for Windows 8.

Although, most hardcore PC Gamers will mostly build their own PCs, but many regular PC gamers will still buy a Gaming PC from Alienware, and CyberPower PC to save time.

A Ubuntu phone or tablet can be a desktop computer when plug into a small charging dock connected to a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, so more people will use their phone or tablet as their desktop PC now because it is more convenient, and to save money since most phones cost $99 with a 2 year cell phone contract which they are already paying for because they need phone service.

only problem with windows 8 is that you need a touch screen to fully use it right.

I been using Windows 8 since it was released last year on a regular desktop computer with a no-touchscreen monitor with a regular keyboard, and mouse, and 8 works better for me because it uses less RAM than Windows 7 which uses slightly more RAM, and starts up slower on older computer.

There is still a regular desktop in Windows 8. I just need to click the Tile shortcut labelled Desktop on the Tiled Desktop, or I can press Windows Key + D shortcut key to go to the classic desktop found in Windows 7, and Vista. All my favorite desktop programs like Opera Web Browser, OpenOffice, Gimp, and other software work in Windows 8 Classic desktop, and using them in 8 is the same as 7 in my experience, but without the higher RAM usages, crashes, and freezes which I experienced in 7 when I used it.

Also, Windows 8 is compatible with Classic shell which you can download at http://www.classicshell.net/ to Windows 8 for people who need to use the Windows Startmenu and Startbutton.

You can also add shortcuts to the taskbar, classic desktop, tiled desktop, and use third party software like Rocket Dock to make launching programs easier.

I probably switch to Linux or continue using Windows 8 since I'm not sure my older computers can run Windows 9, and I don't plan on buying a new computer to use an operating system. Plus, Linux is free, and can run on most older and slower computers like the Raspberry Pi computer which only costs $25-35. Most of the software for Linux is also free.
