A tablet with a bigger screen could make a good phone for people with very big hands, or have bad eye sight who need a bigger screen. There are wireless headsets which can be used for voice chat without holding a tablet for voice calls.

I read on a tech blog that smaller tablets are popular in places like China for using as a smartphone.

I guess it be good for the older folks as long as they were willing to adapt.

Indeed, old people may more likely enjoy tablet because some of them dislike small screens, and small devices because they are hard to see, and they are always losing them because of poor memory problems.

I know my grandma enjoys big screens, has the biggest tv screen possible in her living room.
