I imagine one of the reason paid antivirus is so expensive is because fewer and fewer people buy paid antivirus because of so many people switching to free antivirus like using Microsoft's free Security Essentials software. Security Essentials is not the best antivirus, but it is free.

Hiring computer security coders, and staff is very expensive compared to other tech staff, so paid antivirus makers need to raise prices to stay in business.
