I think its kind of hard to test those as you go along, wouldn't you need a fully assembled motherboard before testing any of it?
There are RAM and power supply tester tools, so you don't need to assemble the motherboard to test RAM and power supply.

It is possible to test the CPU, RAM, motherboard after installing the CPU and RAM in the motherboard, and installing the assembled motherboard in a case, and plugging in a power supply cable on the motherboard. Most motherboard's have video ports which are good for displaying video to see the results of testing programs like memtest.

Most motherboards also have a small speaker which give beep codes to tell you if the RAM, and CPU is working, or broken. If the motherboard never stops beeping, it usually means either your RAM, or CPU is broken.

never sounds that simple though, specially when your custom pc becomes a jungle of connections.

You can sometimes test some individual parts like RAM and sound card on non-custom PCs like basic desktop PC which you can buy or build for a few hundred dollars.

True, but you still have to make sure they are put right into the main custom rig machine. Sometimes RAM doesn't want to go in all the way.
