I've thought about that, but very impractical for someone who uses it often, plus it might cause over heat issues.

I feel a small plastic box with a door is more convenient than a bag with a zipper. Cutting a few small air holes may help with preventing overheating when in a box.
I think there are remote desktop computer programs which let you reply to text messages and use apps on your phone from a Windows PC, so you can use your phone while it is in your pocket.

Yeah I've heard of those, but you need constant internet connection which made make upgrades happen and slow your bandwidth.

I thought you can use your faster local network on your wi-fi router to use remote desktop to access another computer or device.
Disabling automatic app updates on a phone and delaying Windows update may make remote desktop work better.

only for a short while, but updates these days do have a time limit that they have to be run, they can only be paused for so long

I think it is possible to pause updates in Linux based OS like Ubuntu Linux, so Linux based OS maybe better for remote desktop access to a phone.
I think Android can use Chromecast to view Android desktop on a TV, and users can use a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to control Android, so Chromecast and a wireless mouse and keyboard can be a way to use your phone while keeping it in a box in your pocket.
