I agree a router with 6 antennae may help, or making your own antennae for your router may help.

I think you can use wire and a few metal parts to make your own antennae according to an online tutorial I read.

I know radios, and TVs use simple antennae which are mostly made of wire, pieces of metal, and connectors.

wouldn't it require some kind of communicator to pick up the signals though?

I think the communication chip and parts are built-into the circuit board inside a router, and a cable and metal antennae parts are use to pick up the wifi signal, so it can pick up Wifi signals outside the router's circuit board.
