Stop ads on phone apps

Do you know of a way to stop ads from appearing on phone apps?
Blocking the website link of the ad server in your firewall, and router settings may help at blocking apps.
I think it is harder to stop ads on phone apps because some ads maybe physically coded into the app or just an image file or animated gif link put at the bottom of the app, and may not rely on the internet for showing ads. The app maker can always change ad services on apps which make blocking them harder.
