Discs are cheaper, so users can give 100 DVD-R discs with files burned to them to 100 people for about $20. Buying 100 USB flash drives which cost $10 to share files with 100 users can cost $1000.

Disc are also non-reusable/write-once, so people can't change or delete data on the disc unlike USB drives where people, computer program, and virus/ransomware can change the data on the drive.

Seems like if you scratch them though they can become useless.

If the scratch is small, the disc may still work. There are also disc repair kits and tools which can polish the scratch off some disc, so the data is readable again.

At least, it is cheap to re-burn a disc from an Disc ISO file or Disc burning software if the disc gets scratch or lost.

Burning two or more extra backup data disc is a good idea if the disc is use a lot or it is likely to get lost for some reason.

discs are a lot more durable then what DVDS were, back in the day a scratch would ruin most discs.

I read on a tech blog that Blu-Ray discs like Blu-ray movie discs are more durable than DVD.

I feel the people who invented Blu-Ray decided to use better plastics because Blu-Ray disc will be used to store Playstation 3 games and Kids and teen rated movies where the user maybe a young kid who may more likely scratch and drop discs.

The Playstation 3 was an expensive console, so some buyers may want their Blu-ray game and movie discs to feel nicer and thicker than DVD which was used for storing games for the PS2.
