Most have a dedicated hardware firewall that will keep a company safe and screw its own internal stuff from time to time.

I think some smaller companies and average users may use the firewall software which came with their Antivirus. I heard some people making their own firewalls from an average computer.

If you know how to make a decent defense network, it doesn't take much to block threats.

I heard of using cheap $35 Raspberry Pi computers to make firewalls, so I think most cheap computers from a store can be used to make a firewall by using a Linux based OS to run a Firewall program.

Pi's can be made to do anything, I've seen a few made into a virus scanner setup.

That's pretty cool.

I think some people use the Pi to make a homemade VPN and proxy server to protect their wi-fi from hackers and their ISP spying on them.

I've seen people set up PIs like that for their final exam to graduate with. PIs are pretty amazing with what they can do.
