I heard background apps like Google Play and YouTube can use some battery life.

Having a removable battery which can be quickly replaced like old Gameboy handhelds can be useful for people who play mobile games for many hours because they can replace their dead battery with a charged battery in a few seconds.

There are a ton of background stuff that kills battery, wish I could turn them off without rooting the device.

I think the antivirus and App store on some phones may drain the battery sooner.

It does, but it needs some protection from viruses on it.

I think VPN apps can noticeably drain a battery. Users may feel more secure using a VPN app on public wi-fi, or they don't want workers working at their local ISP or cell phone service provider is tracking their online activities.

Having ad blocking vpn on my phone takes a day off of its charge, but worth it to block all the ads.
