The key is not to drop anything, specially if charging.

I think a protective case or a soft floor like a thick carpet or foam pad on the floor could help protect the charging port from drops.

Carpet, much less thick carpet, isn't placed everywhere, nice as that would be.

Carpet flooring does seem to be more rare these days except in cars which still have mostly carpet flooring.
Having a ring style handle bat on a smartphone case could prevent some accidental drops.

It would be better to have them on a tether so they can't reach the floor.

I think some people put their smartphone on a lanyard or necklace to prevent it from dropping to the floor.

There is also side belt holders, but they can be fickle at times.
