Google Mail storage up to 4GB

Users of Google's free web-based email application now have over 4GB of storage space for their online correspondence.

However, this still falls short of the amount of storage space offered by other free webmail services such as Windows Live Hotmail.

Google promised its users when it launched Gmail, known in the UK as Google Mail, that the amount of storage space they got would increase over time, but until recently the figure was hovering around the 2.5GB mark.

Google has decided to increase that figure to over 4GB and at the time of writing the amount of storage space available is 4.2GB and counting.

"We do spend a lot of time working to make sure our users have all the space they need," said Rob Siemborski, Gmail Engineer, on the Official Gmail blog.

According to Siemborski, surfers' storage needs are increasing all the time, especially with new file formats such as RAW - an uncompressed, unprocessed standard - being used for images.

"A few of you are using Gmail so much that you're running out of space, so to make good on our promise, we're giving out more free storage," said Siemborski.

However, Windows Live Hotmail, which has recently been revamped, offers 5GB of storage space for free. Yahoo announced earlier this year that it planned to offer unlimited storage to users of Yahoo Mail.

When Gmail was launched in April 2004, it was on an invitation only-basis, but the service was opened up to all in February this year. Though the name Gmail is still used in most countries but because of copyright infringement it is known as Google Mail in the UK.
