as some or many of you know, I run a game forum and I want to put a portal on it and our built in one isn't that great. So I am looking to add a website onto it (or link to it or something like that) and I recently checked out Joomla. What I saw was pretty good, now I am looking for more opinions about using it or get suggestions for other cms websites.

Joomla is an alright CMS.


I recommend you use JCE WYSIWYG editor for Joomla since the default WYSIWG editor is pretty basic: http://www.joomlacontenteditor.net/

It is simple to install templates, new features, plugins, and components. All you have to do is upload it in your admin panel and enable it.

Learn about HTML, XHTML, CSS FTP, php, seting up a mySQL Database for cmses, and graphic design. Joomla, and all other CMS are not all drag on drop. If you want to make a site that looks different from other sites. You need some knowledge in html, etc.

But, you can make a site that looks generic by just using the WYSIWYG editor.


But, it is more of a learning curve compared to Joomla, but you have more control on how your layout looks, and there are more settings and features for you to play around with.


Summary of CMS based on skill level.

Beginner: Wordpress
Advance: Joomla
More Advance: Drupal

Technically Wordpress is just a blog and not really a cms it can just be modified to be used as one however ill advised.

Zikula, Ovendentia, Php-nuke, drupal, joomla, mambo are just a small selection of CMS's all have there own benefits install a couple and see how they roll,

though i would advise against Joomla simply because it is marginally more difficult than others out there.

actually ovendentia might not be a cms i can't remember.

Though just write your own there not that hard.

looks like I need to look into this a bit more. have you herd of any other good cms's out there?

I agree with SetoTK that Joomla is a bit of a learning curve, but Joomla 1.5 is easier to use then Joomla 1.0.

I think you should get used to using something like Wordpress if you just need a site for posting updates to your forum.

Joomla 1.5 is worth a try, but prepare to spend many hours reading tutorials.

It really depends how much time you have available.

Wordpress is good if your have limited time it's portal features are okay but it's extendability is SHITE!

Nuke is reasonable but is useless on sharedhosts.

Joomla if you have the time it's an EXCELLENT cms,

Drupal is pretty easy and is quite flexible,

phpwebsite (or similar) is good,

but i don't use them i prefer to write my own and spend 2 years getting it how i like, then starting again you know for kicks.

thanks for the feedback guys, I can see Joomla will be a time consumer. but if I get the base on how things work it won't take me long to figure it out.
