Do you think Guest blogging or being a guest writer is more effective then other promotional methods for websites?

It can be if you can some how be a guest blogger in exchange for a one-way back link on a big blog like the official google blog, MTV, Adsense blog, TheInquirer Tech site, The Register, or a blog with a large daily readership base. But, a lot of the times highly successful blogs with a large daily readership base do not offer guest blogging positions to visitors.
