Views on software, games and entertainment as a service?

Do you notice more companies are making their software, and other media types into services instead of buying or downloading an actual license and disk for a game, or software you have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription to use it.
Like Google docs, gmail, Xbox Live, WoW, or automatic updates for paid anti-virus like NOD32, Trend Micro, etc.
I think this is how Mcafee makes most of their money since I can usually easily find a copy with a mail-in rebate and get it for a few dollars or nothing. But, after a year, they ask for money to renew the automatic update service unless the user decides to switch to something better like Comodo AV, AVG, Avast, or some other paid alternatives like Kaspersky.
