I personally just get a few audio books and DVDs on learning Japanese since it will probably be cheaper. I learned a few Japanese phrases from subbed Anime. Watching sub anime is a decent way for learning simple phrases like "cute, hello, goodbye, etc.

Google Translate and online translation programs are not very helpful for learning word by word translations sometimes.
