PS3's Cloud

According to unnamed sources cited by Kotaku, soon, the PlayStation 3 will move to the Cloud. Specifically, the 3.60 firmware update coming soon will include a feature called "Online Saving" giving gamers the ability to save games on remote servers, A/K/A the cloud. This will allow PlayStation 3 owners to save hard-drive space, as well as give gamers the option of picking up a saved game from a different system.

That's all the good news. The bad news: You'll have to have PlayStation Plus service -- the pay-for-it option for PlayStation's option -- to go to the clouds. Also, cloud saving will aid game companies in copy-protection; they'll be able to opt out of it, too.

I got a 250 GB PS3, so this isn't something I need. But this is something to keep in mind down the road.

I prefer memory cards, or USB flash drives for bringing saved game files to other people houses. If I run out of space, I just buy another hard drive which is bigger, or delete demos, trailers, etc to get back more free space.

Only saving stuff online can be a bad idea since if you forgot to pay, can't afford to pay, or refuse to pay for file storage the company might delete or hold your file hostage until you pay them your bill. I also read some companies go as far as hiring collectors to force you to pay for a service you do not want to pay for.

This is why you should have offline version of your files at all times since if the file hosting company hold your files hostage, or deleted your files, you'll always have your files on your hard drive.

you double posted, and I wonder what Nintendo and MS will do to match this.

I'm not sure many people want their game saves and data being saved online since a hacker/enemy can delete your save game files or access your personal information, gaming files, and spy on your gaming habits.

Plus, you'll lose all your files if Sony decides to shut down the cloud, or cancel your account because you forgot to pay similar to how Yahoo killed Geocities making tons of people's websites and data gone forever if they forgot to back up or upgraded to their expensive paid web hosting service.

MS and Nintendo probably do something similar if Sony has success with "the cloud"

it really depends on the person on weather or not they should use this service, because if there is any doubt that you can't keep up payments then obviously you shouldn't use it.

Indeed, I think console these days are becoming less kid friendly since they have to remember or save up money to continue using a service.

I bet some people are also worried about Sony raising prices on these services, and you be stuck paying a more expensive bill, or having them delete your game files if you forgot or can't afford to pay.

systems these days are not kid friendly since it requires so much to get the full thing out of it that parents don't want to pay for.
