Would most of our favorite websites will not exist without online ads?

Yes since asking members, and visitors for donations to pay the bills can be very hard. I only know of Wikipedia.org which can support it websites by only donations from its readers.

Wikipedia also might suffer since I notice some of their sources are from websites which have advertising to help pay the bills.

Website owners can sell products and services on their website, but competing with Amazon, EBay, Walmart.com and established online stores can be almost impossible unless, and not everyone who owns a website like selling things since some people just make websites to publish useful information on the web, meet people, and to have fun.

Plus, buying TV ads, radio ads, and newspaper ads to promote an online stores can cost a lot depending on where you live.

But, for smaller personal websites like Mxproject, the web hosting costs is about 60 dollars a year, so it's not too hard to pay for it.

However, there would be no extra money for cooler themes, mods, and hiring someone to improve the website in the future for many small sites if a small website is ad-free.

I can imagine bigger news and information websites like IGN, 4chan, Gamespot, Kotaku, Soompi, AsianFanatics, most search engines, free web hosting, and social networks, etc which require a lot of bandwidth and faster website hosting will probably have problems making money without ads on their website since their web hosting bill can be hundreds or thousands of dollars a year, and bigger sites hire actual staff who work for money.

Readers probably won't pay for premium subscriptions since they rather just buy a magazine, or don't have a credit, debit card, Paypal, or other means to pay online since you need to be 18 or older to have a debit, credit, and paypal account in many cases.

though annoying, some sites do live only because of ads.

Indeed, I think most stores which sell stuff will also close if there were no ads online since buying ads online to advertise your online store is a lot cheaper then advertising your store on the newspaper, radio, TV, and magazines.
