Keep writing good content, and telling websites and people about your content by adding a link on social bookmarking sites, and they will come.

Just get as many backlink as possible with good techniques not with spamming you will get good presence in the local listing. There are some method like social bookmarking, Forum posting, Article Submission, Directory Submission by which you can get backlinks to your site.

I think Backlinks are not as important these days. You need to write better content, make better videos to share online, and promote yourself on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. If your content is awesome, people will use word of mouth, blog posts, and other methods to promote your site.

If Justin Bieber, iJustine, Rebecca Black and Soulja Boy who all used social networking sites to make them super popular. If they just used their own websites, SEO, backlinks and did not use social sites like YouTube, MySpace, and Twitter. They all probably be less popular since SEO takes a long time even with backlinks.

you do need backlinks so people find your site, but it's half that and half putting good content on your site.

Indeed, but if you have very few mods and admin on your website, it might be a better idea on working on adding more content before posting hundreds of backlinks.

A few backlinks on a few sites like Forums, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook can sometimes be good enough since if your website is awesome people can easily promote your content/links via retweets, likes, favourites, and reposts.
