It can be an expensive if you get the most expensive PS3 with the biggest hard drive as a hobby. It is affordable if you get a PS2 and other older console and buy used games which you can get for 20 dollars or less for the PS2. The Wii and Xbox 360 4GB arcade are both very affordable at under 200 dollars.
But, I feel overtime PC gaming will be more affordable since you can build or buy a computer which can play most older and some newer games at medium quality for 500-700 dollars, and games which you buy from STEAM are a lot cheaper then video games. Plus, you can use a PC to make money by creating Apps, computer programs, and games for PC or consoles while a game console is just for playing back games, and video, but can't be used to make games and programs to sell.
Mobile gaming is currently the cheapest form of gaming since there are a lot of free and cheap games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Cut The Rope, etc which you can play on Tablets, SmartPhones, and color eReaders which you can buy for 199.99 or less.

I do think it's an expensive hobby. New games these days are like $50 or $60. That's just for one game. If you finish games fast then you're spending a whole lot of money on this addicting hobby.
