I have an uncle who is complaining about windows 8 being crap, how is it possible for him to downgrade? He called the store and the clerk talked him into the fact that it's impossible without errors as the machine was fine tune to work on W8 only which is BS.

I assume he only has to format the PC and install W7 OS start disc.

Why not just use Classic Shell which he can download for free from http://www.classicshell.net/ to add a Startmenu, and Startbutton back on Windows 8 like Windows 7 with a startmenu, and Startbutton.

The clerk maybe right since some newer Windows 8 computer has the startup manager/bootloader locked with Secure-Boot/UEFI which only allows Windows 8 and other operating systems installed by the PC maker to be installed.

"UEFI (~EFI) is a firmware interface that is widespread on recent computers, especially those more recent than 2010. It is intended to replace the traditional BIOS firmware interface that is prevalent on earlier machines. This page provides information about installing and booting Ubuntu using EFI, as well as about switching between EFI mode and legacy BIOS mode using Ubuntu. "

It maybe possible to install Windows 7 on the Windows 8 computer if the bootloader is not locked.

It probably be best to exchange the Windows 8 computer, and buy a Windows 7 computer since the retail version of Windows 7 cost $199 which is sometimes half the price of many PC, or use Classic Shell to bring back the Startmenu, and Startbutton to Windows 8 for free.

Installing Windows 7 on a UEFI computer is hard based on some forum topics I read at http://forums.techarena.in/operating-sy ... 375450.htm and http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1035720601

I thought doing a format would make it possible. It's not really the start menu but some of his old stuff isn't working with the OS.

Formating, and installing your own OS works for older computers which uses a motherboard with the BIOS chip, but many newer computers with UEFI locks the user out of installing their own operating system which is not approve by the PC maker according to articles online.

"UEFI means that if a computer is shipped from an OEM like HP, Dell, etc with Windows 8 and UEFI Secure Boot on you could not install a generic version of Linux or indeed any other OS including Windows 7 etc. This would effectively lock someone into using Windows 8 only on these devices. This block would include even downgrading your new system to Windows 7."

You can probably can format the drive, but you may have problems installing Windows 7 if the Motherboard uses UEFI/Secureboot since members on other forums seems to have problems installing Windows 7 on computers with UEFI/Secure boot. Formating the drive would void the warranty, and you'll end up with a broken computer if you have problems reinstalling Windows 8 or 7 after the format.

It probably would be cheapest to return or sell his Windows 8 computer to buy Windows 7 computer, or buy a cheaper used/refurbished Windows 7 computer for $100-200 on eBay : http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... d&LH_BIN=1 since the Windows 7 Home Premium retail box cost $199 which he would need to reinstall Windows 7 Home Premium on a PC,

I see now why so many people build their own PCs. Silly that you buy things and can't use it how you want to.

Building your own computer does not always gaurantee that it won't be locked down since more computer parts like the motherboards, CPU, and Video card these days are locked down to not allow changes by the user, so this could be a trend of companies locking down everything.

Over time, most new computer parts may not work with Windows 7 because computer parts makers will stop making new parts which are compatible with Windows 7, or Microsoft stop supporting newer features on older operating systems like Windows 7 as more users upgrade to 8 when their Windows 7 computer breaks.

I read that Halo Spartan Assault Shooter for PC is only going to be released on Windows 8 + Windows Phone 8.

I think newer Microsoft games and software in the future will stop working on 7, so people who want to play new versions of Fable, Forza, Gears of War, Age of Empire, and future MS games on PC have to upgrade to 8 to play them, or buy an Xbox One.

that's not true and you know that frog. If they sell something that is locked down then you can buy something that isn't locked down. Or you can build your own motherboard.
