I'm just wondering how to tell if a USB port is going bad or if the USB device is bad. I have a USB drive that works fine in other ports, but the one on my PC it takes a good amount of time to detect it.

Maybe there is some compatibility or lag problem on your PC which is causing the port to take a while to detect it, or your antivirus or other software is causing your port to be slow because some antivirus scans your USB drives before you can use the drive.

Does the port take a while to detect non-storage devices when you plug in a non-storage device like a USB keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner, Wi-Fi adapter, Webcam?

I'll have to test it, but I think it's only on that one device.

It might be the storage chip, or storage controller chip on the drive which controls the flash memory which is going bad. I think USB flash drives sometimes break faster from static electricity in your pocket, and clothing zapping your drive. I read on forums that metal flash drives can break because of static electricity on a person's clothing and fingers zapping the flash drice.

I once had a USB hard drive case, and hard drive controller go bad, but when I installed the hard drive in my desktop computer it worked like a regular hard drive, so I think static electricity or a power surge fried the chips which control the USB hard drive controller.

possible, winter clothing gives me lots of static shock so I may have damaged it. I'll have to look into a new device.
