I like phpBB3 since it is free, simple to use, and stable. Mxproject used phpBB2-phpBB3 for many years, and it work pretty well. It is probably one of the best free forum softwares.

for free, I like Jcink's IPB version software.
For paid, I like IPB or Xenforo.
