random freezing?

Would anyone here might know why a windows 7 PC (with an i5, 8 gb of ram and 1 TB of storage) would suddenly freeze up at random times? It doesn't last for more than about five seconds and happens roughly every few hours and it leaves or gives no error messages.

It's not life threatening but just annoying and I can't figure it out why.

It may also be caused by a scheduled task like an antivirus update which may cause Windows to freeze while it is updating the virus definition. Other background tasks and programs like System Utilities, E-mail clients, etc may cause Windows to slow down for a few seconds.

There may also be a chance that Windows Update, or another windows background task like Superfetch/prefetch is causing Windows to slow down.

Superfetch/Prefetch are Windows background programs which load programs, and files to RAM, and the Prefetch folder in the Windows folder, so they load faster the next time you open them.

ahh yeah, I doubt it that's it. I might try and see if w7 has a refresh option for its OS.

I read on forums that Superfetch and Prefetch can cause slowdown problem for computers with less RAM. A lot of tech savvy users who use RAM intensive programs and games sometimes turn Superfetch and Prefetch off by going into the Registry, MSConfig, or Services.msc to turn off Superfetch. Superfetch, and Prefetch may make their computer's SSD storage wear out faster because Superfetch makes the drive read and write more, and may cause overheating problems.

People who use virtual machine software like VirtualBox, and VMWare sometimes turn off Prefetch and Superfetch because they can be very RAM intensive.

it's just annoying that a machine that has the specs to not freeze up does so. I'll just have to play around and see whats up with it.
