What's the maximum amount of data you can burn on a dvd+/-R?

What's the maximum amount of data you can burn on a dvd+/-R?
I heard it was about 4.4 GB even if the disk label is 4.7GB because disk manufacture uses some decimal volume unit.

this is what really annoys me with Any type of data storage
Computers were built for geeks, so they should use the standard 1024 measurement they don't because they can screw the user out of even more
they beleive blocks of 1,000 are easier, perhaps there are for people that can't multiply 5x24, 1x24 and 10x24,
it really gets on my nerves, this is why i endeavour to educate users with the rubberhose end roll of carpet and the sub basement in the ways of computing and why they should buy macs
