HP develops billion colour display

That's real colours, Apple

MAKER of expensive printer ink, HP has developed a new colour display technology that can display a billion colours.

The technology, which will probably end up in movie production, has been developed by HP and DreamWorks Animation and will mean that colours used in movies are consistent.

Currently, the best technology offers 16.7 million colors and is 24-bit. The new technology ups the resolution to 30-bit.

Dubbed the HP DreamColor display, it was shown off at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas.
It is based around an ATI graphics card that supports 30-bit colour displays and a new LED backlight technology in its LCD screen which makes blacks blacker than a black cat in a black hole. It makes whites, well, pretty white.

HP claim that the colours jump off the screen at you. We had a similar problem when our DIY skills failed to secure our LCD wall screen.

The product will be out in the Summer and will end up in workstations for now. µ

LCDs are pretty bad for black levels.

But, the monitor price is probably pretty expensive since workstation class computer and computer peripherals costs a lot more then Consumer computers.

I think I still be stuck with CRTs if I want to watch video that has proper black levels.
