I think phpBB2 is the fastest. I tried phpBB 3.04 and it is not as fast as phpBB2.
I notice on some days thet both load up fast, but my phpbb2 forum seems to have more reliable performance.
Which forum software runs the fastest?

i prefer phpBB2 over phpBB3 just for the fact it's so much easier to modify, manage and use in general.
speed wise they are about the same speed difference is not great enough to matter, what will matter is DB Engine, PHP Version and apache. As well as what type of server they are run on shared hosts are infamous for running wayy slower than a VPS/VDS/DS
