Indeed, you can have a mini- lan gaming party if none of your friends own a hub or switch at their home.

Same for me, or I can use it to download some of my friends files like movies, music, or anime/manga since I don't own a USB flash drive that is over 4GB.

USB 2.0 i has a theoretical bw of 400mbps.. though might be confusing with something else, so a gigabit ethernet switch would be pointless, usb3 more feasible though can't beat a straight forward ethernet
I never really understood Thursdays.

Actually, it still uses ethernet for the transfer method. The USB plug is just used to power the hub, so you don't have to use a AC adapter. Notice in the first picture that the USB cable turns into a power cable at the other end.

But, I'm not sure if the 2.5 watts of power that USB can handle a gigabit hub. But, then again it can power those 2.5" laptop hard drives in those USB hardrive enclousure like the WD Passport.
