The question of backwards compatibility returning has dogged Sony and the PlayStation 3 since it was removed. Now, with the announcement of the PS3 Slim, the company seems intent on squashing it for good. In an interview with Ars Technica, John Koller flatly stated, "[Backwards compatibility is] not coming back, so let me put that on the table. But it's all people ever talk about!"
What's the reasoning behind the permanent removal? "It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he says. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've been buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies. That won't be returning." So, if you hadn't already deduced from Sony's hardware actions for the last year or so, your best bet for playing PS2 games is to dig out your old system, or pick up a new one.

there you have it folks, if you want to play your PS2 games then you better buy yourself a new PS2 or just trade in all your PS2 stuff for a PS3.

that's true, but with sony moving on with PS3 how much longer will PS2 be around?froggyboy604 wrote:That sucks, but a PS2 slim cost $100, so it is not too big of a deal for most people with $100 to spend. If you can afford a $400 PS3, I imagine it won't be too much of a financial burden to spend $100 on a PS2.

My guest is 2011 to 2012 since there still are a lot of PS2 releases for the PS2 according to IGN: http://ps2.ign.com/index/release.html
Who knows, maybe the PS3 fails, and Sony end up relying on the PS2 for income and it be around till the PS4.
I think by that time most of the good PS2 & PSX will be ported to the PS3 and can be bought from the online PSN shop or PS3 classic games like how sega, megaman makes a lot of remakes of their older games for PC and newer consoles.

I'm afraid the PS3 won't be failing anytime soon as some promising games are coming out for it. But I hope sony always keeps the PS2 going in some way for a long time.froggyboy604 wrote:My guest is 2011 to 2012 since there still are a lot of PS2 releases for the PS2 according to IGN: http://ps2.ign.com/index/release.html

I guest it also depends on the economy since not a lot of people have 299-499 USD to spend on the games console, so Sony will still support the PS2 till the economt gets bette. Plus, they are still talking about the PS2 at this years E3.
I bet if more people demand backward compatability sony will make it like how the PS3 used to not have Dual shock controllers, but now it does have dual shock controllers.
