what could cause a sub domain link to work for some but not for others due to the DNS?
I have a link that I use for my forum which works for some but not for others because of DNS settings on their computer. I should also mention that the main link (that the subdomain is based off) works fine for everyone.

I have no idea, but I think you should contact your webhosting, or tell your members to switch to Google DNS, Comodo DNS, or Open DNS, etc.
I used to use my ISP DNS, and get a bunch of "page not found" errors.

depends how people are sent to the subdomain sometimes it can be a bad call on the browsers part
find a semi competent user who is having the problem and tell them to clear there dns
On windows based systems in the run box type : ipconfig /flushdns
and okay it

ipconfig /flushdns unfortunately failed, and I and as well as many other people using the link had to use open DNS to fix the problem.

software needing to be reloaded before it will accept changes software not having been reloaded so it is unaware of all realities
though as opendns sorted it is more likely a dns issue with users isp's
