Are search engines good for looking for information on average non-famous people?

No, Search engines are not the best way to find information about non-famous people for writing a college report, etc.

Non-famous people can very easily make most of the search results about them positive search results by paying a bunch of website owners who own blogs, websites, and forums to write positive posts about them in exchange for money or favors.

I would not use the internet to find info on who is the best plumber in my area since most of the reviews might be fake, written by the owner, or come from untrustworthy sources.

Plus, people can also spread fake info about other people very easily by just making a blog, forum, or website to bash someone.

There are also very little information available for some people online since they mostly keep their social networks private or use usernames, or there is a more famous person with the same name like "Bill gates, Jay Leno, etc." Plus, I'm not sure if many people make blogs for personal use like in the past since these days blogs, websites are more about "Make money online, and consumer products like food, gadgets, computers, and software" topics rather then "personal blogs".

I read online that many popular search terms including famous names are being targeted by online advertising companies and marketers to rank high in the search engines to make money off of selling advertising, or products related to the name.

Indeed, the internet is useful for finding people locally sometimes except for people who never use or don't have any online accounts like a website, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

I mostly use the internet to find people's restaurant, store, and other address to avoid wasting too much time trying to find their company.
