If there is no video or audio from the cable, it is going bad. It could also be the HDMI plug on the TV which is going bad, or the Blu-Ray player, Cable box, or Game console which is going bad.

What if the audio skips? Like it's fine one moment but seems like it's on mute for a few seconds before returning to normal.

Maybe your TV, or Device is lagging. You can try using the cable on another device like game console, blu-ray player, cable box, etc to see if you get the same problem, or use a different TV to see if it is your TV.

My tv is pretty old, though it's hard to tell which item is the problem. I put on a new HDMI cable and things seem better.

I guest it is the Cable since I don't hear of many people saying their TV suddenly drop sound. Good to hear things are better now.
