How exactly do game mods work? Specifically, mods for Skyrim (PC). I'm new to PC gaming if you couldn't tell. But, what exactly are game mods and how do they work? Do they apply to current save files started before the mod was downloaded? Can they cause problems with the game? Any help is appreciated!

Mod = modification. Mods are programs made for a game to give them better graphics, features, and clothing for characters. They are usually created by fans.

There have been some amazing mods for games and not so amazing mods, you mostly see them on PC games.

I agree you mostly see them for PC games, and maybe some mobile games where the files are easier to mod compared to a disc game, or downloaded console games where most files are locked

I bet the Steam Machine console from Valve will allow you to install mods for games since Valve members make money by selling custom mods like clothing for game characters in games like Team Fortress 2.
