Some of the cheaper USB cables are okay for charging MP3 players, but cheap cables which uses poorer quality connectors and wires are not good for charging higher powered devices like laptops like Apple Macbook Pro and smartphones which charge by USB.

It is also important to use the official USB charger or a charger from a safe brand like Nvidia and Amazon which make the Kindle Fire tablet charger which should be safe.

I was using the cable and charger supplied by samsung, but I guess 3rd party batteries don't like that.

Re: Phone gets hot charging?
The age of the cable and charger may make a phone hotter. I read a few stories of old laptops catching on fire because the laptop charger is breaking down from being used too many times, and aging charger parts which may break from too many uses.

I can see that happening.
I did switch the cable out, seems the new one has less heating issues.

The old metal connectors on old cables and chargers can also have rust and oxidation on its metal part where the connection is not always reliable. Rust and oxidation on connectors may cause heating and connectivity problems.
