Re: When is it time to upgrade?
I think for regular laptops with a CD/DVD disc drive, adding a battery slot for a charger alarm may not increase the thickness a lot.

Good luck finding laptops with a disc drive, they are coming out with 17 inches now that even lack that to really keep it thin.

Re: When is it time to upgrade?
I feel some laptop makers may also not install a disc drive to save money, and sell the laptop for a lower price. Companies like Samsung also sell external USB disc drives for $30 on Amazon, so they may make more money selling a laptop and usb disc drive seperately.
Laptops may also be less reliable by making laptop thinner by not including a disc drive, and a slightly thicker heatsink and cooling fan system for the laptop. New thin laptops may last a few years before overheating instead of 5 or more years without overheating problems.

I know even with the tower I built, I had to look really hard, well harder than I feel I should have, for one that would take a disc drive.

I feel Tower case makers may not include a slot to add a disc drive to save money, and sell their case for a cheaper price, so more people will buy it.
The number of people wanting to buy a "new" tower case with a disc drive slot maybe a small amount of people. There are a lot of used tower computer cases with disc drive slots for sale online and used computer parts stores, so people who want to save more money will buy a used tower computer case from a used computer parts store.
Some people also re-use their old tower case with a disc drive slot when building a new tower desktop computer because the case still works and is in good condition.

I wouldn't think adding a slot be that much of a hassle, and always better to offer the option specially for those looking to upgrade.

I feel it won't be much of a hassle to add a disc drive slot to a case.
Some PC case factory owners can be greedy, and only care about making the most money per case by using less metal, plastic, paint, and screws while selling the case for a high price which enough people are willing to pay. I think not includinga disc drive slot may also help the PC case maker save money on shipping because heavy big things cost more money to mail to stores and homes.
