At least there is still a wired USB charging ports on smartphones, so we are not stuck using wireless charging, and can usea USB battery powerbank.
I think some tech companies may make the battery hard to replace, so users also buy the smartphone official battery smartphone charging protective case like the Apple iPhone battery protective case which cost $179 for the iPhone 11, pay for expensive battery repairs, make the phone slim, and buy a new phone when their battery breaks.

even usb ports have been know to be flimsy, from bad pulling out of a cord or pocket lint getting into it.

This is true, USB ports sometimes become damage, and dirty from constant use. It is too bad that most smartphones don't install a protective door to protect the USB port from dirt, and damage.

I think you can, but even the protectors tend to get wedged in and break off.

A case may help protect the USB port if the case also cover the port.

Re: When is it time to upgrade?
that's what I was saying though, the case and protector can break off in the port, rendering it useless.

Maybe it would be best to carry a smartphone in a small bag with a zipper to keep dust away from the smartphone when not in use.
