Re: When is it time to upgrade?
I think some laptops now have non-upgradeable/replaceable RAM which is s rip off since users can't easily replace and upgrade their RAM.

I've seen those, the ram built into the mother board making it impossible to change or upgrade.

I think you need a microscope and a heat gun or sokdering iron to remove and replace the RAM chip on motgerboards.
At least, some thin laptops still come with replaceable SSDs.

I tried the gun that heat bonds things, a bit too delicate for my shaky hands.

I wonder if some motherboards and other parts are designed where you can use a heat gun and lead/metal solder to fix stuff even if you have shaky hands.
I think static electricity maybe a bigger concern than shaky hands holding a heat gun.
Some electronics parts can survive very intense heat. A lot of car electronics like the LCD monitors and electronics can survive getting very hot in a car driven in hot places like the dessert.

I seem to be a magnet for static, another reason I don't attempt tearing stuff apart.

There are anti-static gloves people can use. I think Anti-static gloves are good to use as extra protection in case your antistatic strap and mat/pad is broken.
