It maybe cheaper and easier to replace the motherboard on the Chromebook to a Linux or Windows compatible laptop motherboard to make installing Linux easier.

Never replaced one, but I can imagine it might be easy since most are small form factor.

I think some Chromebooks are based on Windows Netbooks and cheap laptops. I imagine a motherboard made for a Windows Netbook, mini-PC, or tablet will fit in Chromebooks. I think most Chromebooks use Intel Celerons which are compatible with many cheap Windows motherboards for netbooks.

I know its a pretty simple OS, but different enough that viruses don't really affect it.

I think the operating system is locked down on Chromebooks, and Android and Linux Apps run in a virtual machine in Chromebooks which decreases the chance of getting infections.

There are plenty of rooting guides, though you risk bricking the device.

I think there maybe less chance of bricking a Chromebook because it is a very simple OS.
